SMART Amalgam Removal
We are committed to providing the highest level of safety and care in every aspect of our holistic dental practice, which is why we follow the SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) protocol when removing old silver fillings. Developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), SMART is a comprehensive, science-based approach designed to minimize mercury exposure for both our patients and our clinical team during the removal process. This protocol includes advanced air filtration, specialized suction and isolation techniques, and protective barriers to ensure that mercury vapors and particulate matter are safely contained and eliminated.
Amalgam fillings, often referred to as “silver fillings,” are composed of about 50% mercury—one of the most toxic non-radioactive elements on Earth. Over time, mercury can be released as vapor through chewing, grinding, or temperature changes, and may be absorbed by the body. Research has linked chronic mercury exposure to a range of potential health concerns, including neurological, immune, and endocrine disturbances, as well as localized gum and tissue irritation. From an oral health perspective, amalgam can also expand and contract with temperature changes, increasing the risk of microfractures in the tooth structure.
By utilizing the SMART protocol, we protect our patients from unnecessary toxic exposure while restoring their teeth with biocompatible, mercury-free materials that support both oral and whole-body wellness. This careful, mindful process aligns with our integrative philosophy—helping patients achieve a healthier smile in harmony with their overall health.
