Retain Your Willpower

Extra calories sneak around every corner during this time of year, from seasonal cookies at the office to eggnog at holiday parties, and pies for Thanksgiving dessert; it’s no wonder that so many Americans gain weight during the holiday season. Avoid adding a few pounds to your body by following these simple tips:

• Limit your alcohol intake; alcohol can inhibit self-control when it comes to eating.
• Don’t arrive hungrily. This can increase your chances of overeating, if you haven’t had a snack, fill up on a glass of water to reduce your cravings.
• Pace yourself by chewing slowly, this will fill you up with less food.
• Restrict yourself to small portions. The food will still be there! Just eat small portions rather than stacking your plate with excess food that your body doesn’t need.
• Spend more time with friends and family and less time eating. People who focus on food at holiday parties tend to overeat.
• Be selective about treats and desserts. Limit yourself to small portions (again) to avoid eating extra calories and fat.
• Take a walk. Walking before or after meals can burn off calories and puts you more in control over what you eat so you feel better about yourself.

By utilizing these tips, you will find yourself feeling more content and energized instead of so full that you’ve deemed yourself “in a food coma” for the rest of the evening which can leave you feeling sluggish and bloated.

These store bought teeth whitening systems can often have an imbalance of ingredients that can either be too little or too harsh on your teeth.

Over the Counter vs. Professional

Over the Counter teeth whitening systems have improved over the years, however they still do not produce the same results as professional grade methods because they attempt to generalize people’s teeth into a category that would sufficiently whiten teeth for the general population.  The problem with this is that not everyone’s teeth is alike and some people may have very sensitive teeth or crooked teeth, which can make over the counter whitening systems such as whitestrips, unusable because it does not fit to the person’s oral anatomy.  White stripes also only cover a portion of your teeth and neglect the teeth in the back, which causes discoloration among your teeth. Last time we wrote we talked about how dental implants can be a good solution for tooth restoration. This time Dr. Kelley Fisher is here to talk about something a little less extreme. Today we’re going to talk about teeth whitening and the Zoom! system we use here at our practice. We hope with this information, our patients will be able to make a better informed decision before pursuing teeth whitening.

Here at our practice in Issaquah, WA, we use the Zoom! system for our teeth whitening treatments. Zoom! is a little different from other forms of teeth whitening. Before we start the process, we actually encourage our patients to have a tooth cleaning before undergoing teeth whitening. The Zoom! process can be boiled down to three easy steps:

  • Consultation. To find out if Zoom! is the right treatment for your whitening needs, we have our patients come in for a consultation. During this we check the teeth and gums to make sure they will be able to handle the treatment. If everything checks out, the doctor will plan out your treatment and you can get started.
  • In-Office Procedure. The Zoom! procedure takes place in one office visit, taking less than an hour to complete. During the procedure, the doctor will apply a hydrogen peroxide whitening gel that will break up stains and discoloration. The gel is applied over three 15-minute sessions after which a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste is applied to the teeth.
  • Maintenance. After the in-office procedure, you will receive a touch up kit for use at home. Each kit comes with custom-fitted whitening trays.

After receiving treatment, you may be advised to avoid certain types of food. Things like wine, coffee, tea, and tobacco products are commonly the cause of teeth stains and avoiding them will prevent new stains from forming. Additionally, a whitening toothpaste may also help prevent new stains from forming.

In reality, this isn’t the case. Tooth sensitivity occurs due to the dehydration of the tooth. Using a toothpaste with a sensitivity formula is helpful to some patients who experience tooth sensitivity after whitening. This sensitivity is almost always minor, and dissipates quickly.

How does Zoom! Whitening work?

Zoom! Whitening gel has hydrogen peroxide, a powerful bleaching agent, as an active ingredient that is assisted by a specialized light that helps to activate the hydrogen peroxide’s whitening mechanisms. The bleaching agents penetrate the enamel and dentin layers of the tooth and remove the stains in these layers.

How long does the treatment process take?

The entire Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatment takes approximately an hour from start to finish and is accomplished entirely in-office. There are various steps in the treatment process but each step is less than 30 minutes in duration.
